Why ‘Moulin Rouge! The Musical’ is the Ultimate Australian Musical
Moulin Rouge! The Musical and Australia are both spectacular, spectacular, but their similarities go far beyond their inherent greatness.
The musical, based on the 2001 Baz Luhrmann film, opened on Broadway in 2019 to rave reviews, and the show hit Australian shores at Melbourne’s Regent Theatre in 2021. The production opened in both Melbourne and London on the same night. How’s that for Melbourne on the global stage?
After Melbourne performances, Moulin Rouge! The Musical heads to Sydney’s Capitol Theatre from 28 May. So find out more why this epic musical about truth, beauty, freedom, and love has taken the world by storm and is the perfect show for Australians and bohemians alike!
Moulin Rouge! The Musical originated Down Under. First of all, everyone knows Baz Luhrmann, the multi award-winning Australian director, writer, and producer, who wrote and directed the original 2001 film on which the musical is based.
But Baz is not where the Australian connection stops. Moulin Rouge! The Musical is the first Australian-produced musical to originate on Broadway with producers Global Creatures, a proudly Australian company, leading the way. Global Creatures has also shepherded productions like How to Train Your Dragon, Muriel’s Wedding The Musical, King Kong, Strictly Ballroom The Musical and Walking with Dinosaurs.
The cast is full of talented Australian performers
Moulin Rouge! The Musical held open call auditions throughout Australia to find its spectacular, spectacular cast, receiving over 2000 submissions and auditioning 479 performers to fill 34 roles.
Alinta Chidzey (Chicago, West Side Story) will star as the sparkling diamond, Satine, opposite newcomer Des Flanagan as bohemian dreamer Christian. Simon Burke will play legendary club impresario Harold Zidler and Andrew Cook will play the mysterious and conniving Duke.

The club’s famed entertainers known as the “Lady Ms” will be played by Samantha Dodemaide as Nini, Olivia Vásquez as Arabia, Ruva Ngwenya as La Chocolat, and Christopher J Scalzo as Babydoll.
Also joining the company is Fabian Andrés, Amy Berrisford, Devon Braithwaite, James Bryers, Anica Calida, Kahlia Davis, Rodney Dobson, Joseph Donovan, Jarrod Draper, Bayley John Edmends, Brittany Ford, Chaska Halliday, Scout Hook, Graeme Isaako, Keian Langdon, Bree Langridge, David Ouch, Sam Parkes, Clay Roberts, Emma Russell, Maxwell Simon, Kara Sims, David Sirianni and Patrice Tipoki.
The music is the perfect party playlist
We know Sydney likes a party, and the jam-packed mash-up score of Moulin Rouge! The Musical makes you feel like you’re at a club. The production features over 70 songs including everyone’s favourite “Lady Marmalade”, and thrilling new additions from Adele, Katy Perry, Sia, Beyoncé and more.
The original Broadway cast recording was Grammy-nominated and the New York Times said the musical offers “a party and a playlist for the ages.” Take a listen to the original Broadway cast recording of Moulin Rouge! The Musical below.
“If I’m an audience member coming to see Moulin Rouge! The Musical, I want to GO to the Moulin Rouge.” That was the brief director Alex Timbers gave to scenic designer Derek McLane when he approached him to design the set for Moulin Rouge! The Musical. And boy did McLane deliver.
McLane went about designing a space that would instantly transport audiences to what we can only imagine the famed club might have been like in the 1890s. As soon as you walk into the room, you’ve left the outside world (and your troubles) behind.
The stage itself extends into the theatre with a central catwalk and runways stretching either side, framing two exclusive areas of cabaret-style tables and chairs from where audience members can enjoy the show. Of course, it wouldn’t be the Moulin Rouge without the famous, red windmill, the giant elephant, and the iconic L’Amour sign.
When the red windmill arrived at Melbourne’s Regent Theatre, it may have found its most fitting home yet. The opulent Melbourne icon was originally a cinema, mirroring the journey of Moulin Rouge! from screen to stage and according to none other than the film’s director, Baz Luhrmann, it is “one of the great theatres of the world.”
Derek McLane’s incredible set designs have now quickly taken shape and “is ready to Rouge” at the recently refurbished Regent Theatre.
