About Ain't Too Proud on Broadway

AIN'T TOO PROUD is the electrifying new musical that charts the rise of the legendary R&B vocal group, fueled by the signature dance moves and silky-smooth harmonies that propelled them to the top of the charts an astounding 14 times. The story of brotherhood, family, loyalty and betrayal touches on the personal and political conflicts that surfaced as civil unrest gripped the country, but shows how the group prevailed, going on to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on the strength of such unforgettable songs as “My Girl,” “Just My Imagination,” “Get Ready,” “Papa Was a Rolling Stone,” and many more.

After record-breaking engagements in Washington, DC, and Los Angeles, the unforgettable, untold story of this legendary quintet arrives on Broadway.

Tell Me More

Get ready, ‘cause here they come! The Temptations took the world by storm in the 1960s and 1970s with their soulful sound and bold take on social issues. They take center stage again in Ain't Too Proud, a jukebox musical for the ages. Otis Williams, the founder and last surviving original member of the Motown vocal group who still owns the group’s name and tours with The Temptations (a group that has seen 24 members over the course of six decades), spearheads the new musical, conceived by director Des McAnuff and choreographer Sergio Trujillo.

The R&B quintet take on iconic hits such as “Get Ready,” “My Girl,” “Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me),” and, of course, the title track “Ain't Too Proud to Beg” — not to mention various chart-toppers from the Motown era.

What to watch for

  • The Ain't Too Proud: The Life and Times of the Temptations musical played four developmental productions before coming to Broadway. It stopped at Berkeley Repertory Theater in California, the Kennedy Center in DC, Center Theater Group in LA, and The Princess of Wales Theatre in Toronto.
  • Director Des McAnuff and choreographer Sergio Trujillo previously collaborated on the jukebox musicals Jersey Boys, featuring the music of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, and Summer: The Donna Summer Musical, featuring the music of Donna Summer.
  • Ain't Too Proud on Broadway is written by Dominique Morisseau. Morisseau is from Detroit, where The Temptations got together in 1960.
  • Ain’t Too Proud is one of the latest jukebox musicals to hit Broadway, following shows such as Head Over Heels, Escape to Margaritaville and On Your Feet!
  • Ain't Too Proud: The Life and Times of the Temptations tickets are suitable for children aged 12 and over. Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre.
