Tell Me More

See three acclaimed actresses — four-time Emmy winner Edie Falco, Tony nominee Marin Ireland, and Tony winner Blair Brown — portray one family in Simon Stephens’s Morning Sun at New York City Center. Get Morning Sun tickets on TodayTix.

Morning Sun is a play set in one walk-up apartment in Greenwich Village. Three women, all of different generations of the same family, share it at various times. The simple setting is used to explore how one woman’s life changes and develops over the course of more than 50 years, and all the women, whose lives all spring from each other’s, are simply finding their way in life.

The show has been in development since 2018, and after three years, Morning Sun Off-Broadway is finally making its world premiere. Tickets to Morning Sun in New York are on sale on TodayTix now.

What to Watch For

  • Director Lila Neugebauer is no stranger to helming woman-centered productions: She received critical acclaim for her Off-Broadway production of Sarah DeLappe’s The Wolves, a play about a girls’ soccer team, in 2016. Nor is she a stranger to shows about families: In 2018, she directed Kenneth Lonergan’s The Waverly Gallery on Broadway, a play about a family struggling with their mother’s descent into Alzheimer’s.
  • Playwright Simon Stephens has been seen on the New York stage with 2015 Best Play Tony Award winner The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and the monologue Sea Wall that formed one half of the Broadway production Sea Wall / A Life. His immersive audio theatre experience, Blindness, was the first indoor theatre production to open in New York following the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Morning Sun takes its name from a painting by Edward Hopper, known for portraits of women and others in scenes from everyday American life in the mid-20th century. The sole figure in the painting is a woman sitting on an unmade bed in an apartment, looking out a sunlit window. Some say the work conveys loneliness; others, peace.
  • Blair Brown once likened her and her castmates’ ordinary characters to the people “standing behind you at the dry cleaners,” a description coined by Tracy Letts used to describe the types of people he writes plays about.
